EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

We have an Earthquake Preparedness and Disaster Action Plan. Every child must have an earthquake kit that is kept at the school. The kit may be purchased elsewhere. The kit must have at least a one year shelf life. It is the parent's responsibility to keep their child's kit updated yearly.

MEDICAL RELEASE

Consent for emergency medical treatment for your child has to be on file at the school at all times. Please keep the information updated. (Changes of address, phone numbers, etc.)

EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS AND DISASTER ACTION PLAN
MARY LAW PRIVATE SCHOOL
INTRODUCTION.
This earthquake disaster preparedness plan provides for the welfare and safety of the students and staff of Mary Law Private School in the event of a severe earthquake and establishes a method for evacuation of school premises following such an occurrence..

PREPARATION OF THE SCHOOL - HAZARD ASSESSMENT.
Evaluation of interior & exterior portions of the school building as well as school grounds.
1 - Bookcases - shelving within classrooms are secured to the walls.
2 - No heavy objects on shelves and cabinets.
3 - All water heaters are anchored. Three water heaters containing 150 gallons of water- sufficient for immediate needs.
4 - No toxic or flammable material in class rooms.(Individual teachers responsibility). To be checked by Asst.Administrator' every 1st of the month.
5 - Proximity of high voltage power lines adjoining new building noted.
6 - Possibly the safest area for gathering students in case of emergency would be the parking lot due to absence of gas water and sewer lines in the immediate vicinity.
7- Emergency rations available. Emergency Kits purchased by parents avail­able for each pupil.
8 - First aid kit in each classroom
9 - At least three members of the staff know the procedures to shut of all gas,water and electricity.
10 - Adequate number of fire extinguishers available. All personnel know how to use same in emergency situation.
11 - Emergency telephone numbers for city and county disaster responding agencies (police, fire, hospitals, Red Cross, Civil Defense, gas, electric and water companies) available on wall near Secretary's Desk.
12 - Duplicate copies of emergency cards to be held at one other location besides the school Office. School will remain open indefinitely until every child has been released to parents or to an authorized person.

PREPARATION OF STUDENTS
Complete drill to be held 3 times a year
At teachers Command students assume drop position
1 - Away from windows or other potential hazards
2 - Under desk, table or other shelter or against inside wall
3 - Drop to knees with back to windows
4 - Head down towards knees, hands clasped behind neck, arms against eyes closed.
5 - If jacket or other object available, could be used for additional head protection.
6 - Be silent so directions could be heard.
7 - Teacher also assumes drop position with children, then stands and monitor students' position.
8 - Students hold drop position for 60 seconds.
9 - Teacher gives directions for evacuation to prearranged location. ?
10 - Teacher takes Emergency Kit to evacuation site.
11 - Teacher & students stay at evacuation site until directed to return to room.
12 - Students learn what to do during quake if no adult is present or if student is at lunch, in the corridor or playground.
13 - Additional drills including non-homeroom settings e.g. recess, lunch to be held .

Classroom Education.
Earthquake Education Program to be taught to include:
1 - Importance of Drills
2- Discuss noise accompanying-quake, results (falleri-books, broken glass etc.) aind need-for students to be silent and listen for, direction.
3 - Discuss aftershocks and procedures if elsewhere at time of quake (bathroom, on the way to or from school, etc.)
4- Discuss prevalence of quakes and other natural disasters around the world frequent natural events which will occur here again.
5 - Discuss student release policy - Teachers will always be there until the parents come for the children no matter how late. Do not have to be afraid of staying overnight at the school if need be.
